ENGAGE YOUR OFFICIALS
VFC knows that safety from gun violence is a bipartisan concern among American citizens, and data shows that common sense gun laws have support across the nation. Unfortunately, pursuing GVP at the legislative level has been politicized and made partisan from school boards and municipal governments to the state capitol to the federal government. While it can feel uncomfortable or daunting or inconsequential, we know speaking to elected officials and urging attention to GVP at all levels of government remains a powerful way to impact the safety of our communities.
See below for ways to get started:
Contact Your Rep
Search for your state and federal legislators here: https://whosmy.virginiageneralassembly.gov/
ADVOCACY HACK!
Save the phone numbers and emails of all of your elected officials so you can easily contact them.
Check Their Records on GVP
On VPAP’s main page, search the name of your delegate in the upper left search bar.
Click their name, then scroll down and make sure the “2025 regular session” is selected in the "select year" field.
Click “voting analysis” and then “close votes.”
Click the grey box: “public safety” in the topics section and then “guns/weapons.” This will bring up two pages worth of votes on Gun Violence Prevention bills
If you want to know how your VA delegate and or VA senator voted this past legislative session, you can check out our handy video, or follow these simple steps:
Ready to call your elected officials, but not sure what to say?
Our scripts provide examples of how to address federal and state-level officials, differentiating based on their support (or not) of GVP.
Organize A Meeting With You Rep
VFC has organized over 18 constituent meetings with federal and state-level officials across both sides of the aisle. Our Constituent Meeting Guide walks you through the process from start to finish, including how to prepare for the meeting and what to expect the day of the meeting. The guide also contains talking points, resources, and materials to give your representative. The VFC Constituent Meeting Coordinator will also support you in all aspects of planning the meeting, and even attend with you if possible!
